Partnering with Community Resources: A Holistic Guide to Maternal Health
Pregnancy can be the most exciting, hopeful time of a woman’s life. It can also be very overwhelming. After all, there is so much to consider: who will I go to for medical support, how will I feed my baby? You will want to be prepared, and you will want the best care for both you and your baby. Thankfully, there are so many wonderful organizations and agencies right here in Kansas City that want the very best for you and your baby as well!
Immediate Medical Care
After taking a pregnancy test at home, you will need to quickly get in contact with a medical provider to confirm your pregnancy and get any needed care. Beyond hospitals and physician’s offices, there are several pregnancy clinics around Kansas City that can provide clinical pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, STI testing, counseling, parenting classes, and other physical resources to expectant mothers in need. These centers will not replace regular prenatal care, but are an excellent place to start and are typically available at no cost to the patient.

Education
If you are newly pregnant, the best way to start wrapping your mind around all of the changes that you are experiencing is by attending some prenatal classes. Prenatal classes can cover a wide array of topics including: fetal development, pregnancy coping strategies, labor and delivery, breathing and pain management, postpartum recovery, newborn care, and more.
Most KC area hospitals offer these classes, and many of them are free or low-cost. Many women prefer to take classes from the hospital where they plan to deliver, but that is not a requirement. Some hospitals offer in-person courses, while others have virtual sessions. Where you attend classes is up to you!

Doula Support
Labor and delivery can feel daunting. During this time, many pregnant women seek support from someone who can be there for them and help coach them through their labor. Doulas are valuable trained professionals whose mission is to care for and advocate for the birthing mother. Along with physical support, such as breathing techniques, massage, and acupressure, doulas also provide education about the birthing process, coping strategies, and medical decisions. Doulas are able to assist with any birth plan that a mother chooses; they collaborate with both the mother and her medical team to facilitate the best birthing experience possible. Doulas also assist with breastfeeding and newborn care. Many doulas extend services into the postpartum period as well.
There are several organizations in Kansas City that aim to provide these services for free or low cost.

Breastfeeding Support
Like childbirth, breastfeeding is brand new territory for many mothers. There can be a learning curve, and if you plan to breastfeed it is a great idea to do some prep work before your baby’s arrival. Nearly every hospital linked above offers breastfeeding classes in addition to prenatal classes. Doulas are also able to assist with breastfeeding.
Even the most experienced mothers often need breastfeeding support. Kelly Mom is an excellent online resource that is available to everyone. The website offers a wide array of articles that offer evidence-based, comprehensive guidance on breastfeeding.
For in-person education, support, and troubleshooting, lactation consultants are an amazing resource. Lactation consultants can help assist with latching problems, milk supply issues, breast pain or discomfort, special feeding needs, weaning, and any other breastfeeding concern. Breastfeeding is a commitment, and having a professional whose mission is to support the mother is so valuable. Medicaid can cover the cost of working with a lactation consultant with a referral from the mother’s healthcare provider. To find a lactation consultant near you, search the ICLA.
